NPC IFBB PRO LEAGUE CRITERIA FOR JUDGING BIKINI COMPETITORS
Sourced through Scoop.it from: npcnewsonline.com
For many years, the judging criteria for bikini competitions have been somewhat ambiguous. And, the outcome of many contests reflected the preferences of different judges. The rule of thumb for most amateur competitors is to look to the pros and emulate their physiques. But, how do you know which pro to follow? After all, the winning bikini physique varied considerably from one competition to the next and across different geographies. Athletes and coaches alike have eagerly anticipated more precise guidance from the IFBB & NPC. Fortunately, as of this week, the wait is over. This week the IFBB/NPC came out with comprehensive guidelines of the judging criteria for the bikini division.
These criteria include muscularity, conditioning, symmetry/balance, and individual presentation. Let’s break it down:
Muscularity
Muscularity is the proportion of muscles the person carries on their frame. The judges want to see some muscle on a bikini competitor. As Sandy Williamson, the IFBB & NPC women’s chairwoman said: Bikini athletes “have to have a little bit of muscle, that’s what gives female athletes shape to [their] bodies.” A bikini competitor should have a small muscular foundation. In the bikini division, glutes should be rounded and not squared. And, shoulders should have a small amount of roundness as well.
Conditioning
Conditioning refers to the amount of fat present over the muscles. Bikini athletes should display great conditioning, especially in the core (midsection), but should not be grainy or striated. A slight separation between the hamstring and glute area is highly desired. The rest of the body should display a smooth shape and not have muscular density and separation as seen in a figure physique.
Symmetry and Balance
The overall look should be pleasing to the eye, and this includes hair, make-up, suit, and tan.
Presentation
Presentation refers to the posing routine and is crucial, as it displays the results of months of sacrifice, competition dieting, and exercise. Confidence, playfulness, and a little bit of sass go a long way in the bikini division.
The Bikini Division was first introduced in 2009 and has evolved considerably over the years. It has grown in popularity over the last nine years and has great mainstream appeal. The updated judging criteria and its standard bearer Ms. Bikini Olympia Angelica Teixeira will continue to build on that momentum, and provide a clear image of the winning look for a bikini competitor. I am excited about the additional clarification, and believe it will help me and my clients to better prepare for the main stage.
