Before signing up for your first bikini contest….

5 Things to consider before your first bikini contest

Most people become interested in bikini athletics because they know a competitor.  And, even if you don’t know one personally, you may have seen someone with the perfect bikini physique on Instagram.  Lord knows there is no shortage of bikini competitors, experts, and influencers on Social Media.   It’s easy to get inspired.  But, how on earth do you get started?

Do your homework

Take the time to learn about the different bodybuilding federations. There are several, each with their unique rules and standards.  It’s important to learn about the organization, its history, and the judging criteria they follow.  Look up the most recent competitions and their winners.  This will give you an idea of what the judges are looking for.  The most popular amateur bodybuilding organization is the National Physique Committee, known as NPC.  You can find them here http://npcnewsonline.com/

Take a good look in the mirror

Once you find the organization, it’s time for an honest evaluation.  It’s important to note, that even though it’s a bikini competition, it’s still bodybuilding. Some muscular development is essential to compete in bikini.  Don’t be discouraged if you don’t see immediate results.   You will be surprised at your body transformation once you get your ducks in a row.

Hire the right coach

Hiring the right bikini prep coach is very important.  Your coach should build a program specific to your needs, guide you through the process, from training & dieting to posing & overall stage presence, and help motivate you in your moments of self-doubt.  Your bikini competition coach should know the upcoming contest calendar and guide you to the right show.  And, an experienced bikini prep coach will look at your physique and anticipate the time it will take for you to prepare.  There are literally hundreds of competition coaches out there, so it’s important to do your homework.  Take the time to review their educational background, experience, client testimonials, and specific services offered.  Prices vary considerably in the industry but make sure you get the attention you deserve. Some “bargain” coaches provide a cookie cutter approach that seldom yields good results.  Remember that often in life, you get what you paid for.

Pick a contest date

Find the calendar of novice bikini competition in your area, and give yourself enough time to prepare. For your first bikini contest, I would even suggest at least 16 weeks.  The more time the better. When in doubt, lean on the experience of your coach.

Jump in with both feet

It’s time to put in the work, and this isn’t the time for half measures.  Follow the prescribed plan to the letter, and don’t be afraid to ask questions!  After all, this is your first time, and there is no stupid question.

Getting ready for your first bikini competition can be exciting and scary at the same time. Some days you will feel like a beast, ready to conquer the world, and other days you will want to throw in the towel. The good news is every competitor goes through the same struggles; we just have to remind ourselves why we decide to compete in the first place.  But, there is no greater feeling than stepping up on contest stage knowing you’ve given it your all.
