Exercise vs Diet: Which is More Important

One way that exercise helps promote weight loss is by increasing resting energy expenditure. That’s how quickly you burn energy even at rest. Since resting energy expenditure accounts for 60% to 75% of the calories you burn each day."

Today I read a great Havard Health Publishing article that tackles the age-old question of diet versus exercise, and how they affect your energy consumption at rest. I tell my Bikini Prep clients that you can’t out-exercise a bad diet.  This is why so many people struggle to meet their fitness goals even if they exercise regularly.

When looking for immediate weight loss results dieting is a far more efficient than exercise.  However, over time your body responds by slowing down its metabolism (even at rest).  That fact is really important since we all burn 60% to 75% of our calories at rest.  After a period of dieting, when you resume your regular caloric intake, your body usually stores those added calories as fat.  In fact, many people gain more weight than they initially lost.

My solution is to use a form of reverse dieting (after achieving your weight loss goal) in combination with regular exercise. This will allow your body’s metabolism to remain higher while adapting to an increase in calories over time.  If you are interested in learning more about reverse dieting after achieving your fitness goals contact me at  tatiana@bikiniprepcoach.com.
